Blepharoplasty

The eyes are not only “windows to the soul” but also a telltale sign of aging, mood, and how much sleep we got last night. Under-eye swelling, loose lid skin, and noticeable wrinkling detract from the eyes’ natural beauty. And, despite the claims made by manufacturers of creams and serums, these products cannot remedy more significant concerns. These issues can only be corrected surgically with Eyelid Surgery, or Blepharoplasty by a professional plastic surgeon like our team at The South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Fort Lauderdale.

The South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery is home to some of Fort Lauderdale’s most respected facial and eyelid plastic surgeons. Eyelid surgery, also called a blepharoplasty, can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both the upper and lower eyelids. A quad blepharoplasty will address both the upper and lower eyelids and can dramatically improve the appearance of the entire face for a patient correcting years of aging in a single surgery. Whether surgically improving the lower, upper, or both, a blepharoplasty rejuvenates the appearance of the eyelids by addressing the effects of aging. Eyelid surgery can reduce loose and sagging skin that unnatural folds and can even impair a patient’s field of vision. As we age, it is common that bags and fatty deposits will develop under the eyes. During a blepharoplasty, eye bags can be removed creating a youthful under eye area. While no two patients have the same eyelid concerns, the plastic surgeons at the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery have helped thousands of patients improve the appearance of the areas surrounding the eyes with Eyelid Lift surgery, leaving them with a wide-eyed, rejuvenated appearance.

    The Blepharoplasty Process

    Consult

During your initial visit, expect to provide your complete medical history, including all your medications, allergies, and previous surgeries. You’ll also undergo an extensive physical exam and blood tests before your surgeon takes photographs to aid in planning and performing your Eyelid Lift. Finally, you’ll receive important instructions to prepare for treatment, as well as a realistic explanation of the results you can expect to achieve.

    Procedure

Eyelid Lift, or Blepharoplasty surgery is performed by first making an elliptical incision in the eyelid. Excess skin, muscle, and fat bags will be removed and the incision will be closed with stitches. In addition, residual fatty tissue deposits may be removed through liposuction as each Eyelid Lift is unique, depending upon the needs of each patient.

    Recovery

After surgery, you will experience some discomfort once your anesthesia wears off. Our goal is to keep you as comfortable as possible. So, your surgeon will provide you with medication to mitigate any pain and soreness. Some swelling and discoloration are expected, but they usually subside in five to ten days. Ice compresses will be applied and should be continued for 24 hours after your procedure.

    Post Surgery

You will need a trusted person to take you home after surgery, and you should remain under their care for 24 hours. You should rest and keep visitors and telephone calls to a minimum for the first two days. Stitches will be removed four days after surgery.

Feel free to talk to your doctor about the exact look you are hoping to achieve and any questions you have about your procedure.

Operating time to perform both upper and lower eyelids takes approximately one to two hours. Less time is required if the procedure is performed only on either the lower or upper eyelids.

Our professional M.D. Anesthesiologist always administers general anesthesia for all surgical procedures. In some cases, a blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia if the patient is not a candidate for general anesthesia.
