Selfies cause rise in Plastic Surgery

young woman lookingIt’s impossible to scroll through your social media feeds without encountering a “selfie” — i.e., a picture that someone takes of themselves and posts to garner reactions from followers. If you believe selfies are only a passing trend, it might surprise you to learn that they have some long-lasting influence.

According to a report released by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), one in three plastic surgeons surveyed have seen an increase in requests for plastic surgery, as a result of patients being more aware of their looks because of social media.

“Social platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and the iPhone app Selfie.im, which are solely image-based, force patients to hold a microscope up to their own image and often look at it with a more self-critical eye than ever before,” said Dr. Edward Farrior, the president of AAFPRS.

When ABC News reported on this trend back in August, one New York plastic surgeon told reporters, “I’ve noticed over the last six months [that] patients actually bring a selfie to the examining room. They show me what bothers them and what they would like to fix.” Another New York City plastic surgeon added, “I personally would see two to three patients a day that have come in from selfies and social media.”

Most Requested Procedures

Rhinoplasty and Botox injections are among the most requested procedures to make selfies look more attractive. Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, improves an oversized or crooked nose, or addresses an unflattering feature of the nose such as an upturned tip or uneven nostrils. Botox treatment temporarily smoothes wrinkles and lines around the forehead and eyes.

Hand rejuvenation is popular among women that get engaged and want their hands to look beautiful in photos of their wedding rings.

The AAFPRS report contained another interesting and possibly related trend: plastic surgery patients are trending younger. More than half of the doctors AAFPRS surveyed said they saw an increase in patients under 30 requesting plastic surgery and non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment. Since social media and selfies are particularly popular with the younger crowd, this could be a contributing factor.

How Cosmetic Enhancement Can Help You

Selfies and social media aren’t the only reasons to pursue cosmetic surgery. People want to look great and feel great in real life — not just their virtual lives. If you feel self-conscious about your appearance, cosmetic enhancement can potentially have a tremendous effect on your self-esteem and overall quality of life. Think of the confidence you will project when you finally feel good about you appearance.

At the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we are happy to meet with anyone considering plastic surgery, and go over our wide selection of surgical and non-surgical options. After learning more about you and your unique cosmetic goals, we can recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

After Cosmetic Surgery Care: Things You Should And Shouldn’t Do After Plastic Surgery

habits to avoid after plastic surgeryThe skilled plastic surgeons at the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery do everything in their power to help ensure patients achieve the best possible aesthetic results from plastic surgery. However, it is important that patients do their part as well. This includes avoiding certain activities after cosmetic surgery, especially the first several weeks of the recovery process. The following are three things you should never do in the first few weeks after your cosmetic procedure.

What Not To Do After Cosmetic Surgery?

Smoke

If you need another reason to abstain from smoking, this is it: smoking constricts blood vessels, making it difficult for the body to deliver nutrient-rich blood to the healing tissues in your treatment area. It also deprives the blood of life-giving oxygen, and instead fills the blood with noxious chemicals. Smoking can lead to several postoperative complications, including excessive scarring, poor wound healing, and other side effects.

Expose Incision Sites to the Sun

With proper care, the scars from your incisions should eventually fade to match the color of the surrounding skin, so they are nearly invisible to others. However, even 20 minutes of sun exposure can cause your incision scars to rise up from the surface of the skin and become red. Once this happens, it is nearly impossible to improve the look of scars. If you don’t want telltale signs of your procedure (i.e., red, raised scars), be sure to keep your incision sites out of the sun for at least six months after your procedure. You can do this by staying in the shade or covering incision sites with clothes or sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or more. (Be sure to reapply your sunscreen frequently, especially after swimming or sweating.)

Ignore Your Plastic Surgeon’s Instructions

Besides the post-operative doctor visits, post operative care also includes what patients do at home during the surgery recovery. In general, you should follow all your plastic surgeon’s postoperative instructions as closely as possible to ensure you achieve the best results possible. This includes wearing any surgical garments (e.g., surgical bra, compression garments) for as long as directed by the surgeon, massaging the treatment area if directed, Pain management Рtaking any pain medications, antibiotics, and/or supplements as instructed, etc. If you ignore your knowledgeable surgeon’s instructions, you will probably not achieve the results you desire and potentially extend the recovery times.

5 Fall Skin Care Tips

Fall Skin Care Tips

Summer is almost over, and fall is nearly here. Not only is it time to break out your sweaters, but it’s also time to re-evaluate your skincare routine. No matter what your skin type is, what may have worked well during the hot summer months may not benefit your skin during the cooler, less humid autumn months. Below The South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery shares these five fall skincare tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing as the seasons change.

#1: Reach for the Oil

We realize that you probably spent much of the summer trying to keep oily skin at bay, so it may sound counterintuitive to reach for an oil-based moisturizing product now. However, using an oil-based moisturizer will give your skin the extra moisture it needs now that humidity levels are starting to wane. Facial oils provide mega moisture while still feeling light on your face. Also, facial oils are absorbed into the skin more quickly than heavier, cream-based moisturizers, so you won’t have to wait as long before applying your makeup. It is especially beneficial for people with dry skin, who struggle to find the right skin care products. Use a good face mask weekly to replenish moisture that is lost over time.

#2: Don’t Stop Using Sunscreen

The sun may not feel as strong during fall as it did during summer, but it never stops emitting harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause sun damage, skin cancer, and premature signs of aging, such as hyperpigmentation (dark spots). That is why you should never forget to apply sun protection. To protect your skin, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (with an SPF of at least 15) before you leave the house each day, even if it looks overcast outside.

#3: Keep Your Cuticles in Mind

Dry, rough cuticles are a telltale sign of colder temperatures. This autumn, get into the habit of rubbing cuticle oil onto your cuticles a few times a week. Being meticulous about applying cuticle oil now will help you avoid painful cracked skin later. By winter, your hands will thank you!

#4: Protect Your Lips

It is easy to forget that you have delicate sensitive skin on your lips, too. Avoid flakey, cracked lips by applying a lip balm regularly. You may also want to exfoliate your lips every couple of weeks by lightly brushing them with a soft, dry toothbrush. Taking good care of your lips this fall will make them soft and kissable in time for mistletoe season.

#5: Renew Your Skin

Autumn is a symbol of renewal. If the beating sun wreaked havoc on your skin this summer, perhaps it’s time to renew your skin. At the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we offer several non-surgical cosmetic treatment options to give you refreshed, revitalized healthy skin.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments are designed to slough off the dead skin cells that can clog up pores and make your skin look dull. We also offer intense pulsed light (IPL) photo facials to improve the look of fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Whatever your skin care needs are, we have an effective treatment option for you whether it is for preventive measures, anti-aging, or rejuvenation.

Cheek Enhancement Options: Fillers, Surgery & More

cheek augmentation proceduresNearly everyone finds beautifully defined features such as sharp cheekbones and prominent chin lines attractive. Unfortunately, not everyone is born with angular cheekbones positioned high in the cheek area.  Luckily, South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery offers both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures to help you achieve the volume in the cheeks  that you desire.

What is Cheek Enhancement?

One of the options to restore a volume loss in the cheeks is the use of implants or Cheek Enhancement Surgey. It is a perfect procedure for people who seek a long-term result with a minimal downtime. During surgery the implant is placed through a small incision in the mouth, lower eyelid, or hairline. All types of incision allow the surgeon to hide the scar and make the result look as natural as possible.  Cheek implants are an effective way to achieve pronounced cheekbones that provide a more aesthetically pleasing contour throughout the entire face. Your cosmetic surgeon may also recommend an adjunct chin implant procedure to balance out facial features and optimize the aesthetic results of the cheek augmentation  procedure.

Cheek Enhancement Options & their Pros & Cons

If you’re not ready for a surgical procedure but want to enhance your facial features, injectable cheek enhancement fillers might be the perfect solution. Non surgical cheek enhancement provides instant results, are minimally invasive, and do not require downtime. Injectable fillers can do wonders when it comes to adding subtle definition to the cheekbones and enhancing the look. .

One of the most popular products used for cheek augmentation is JUVEDERM VOLUMA XC. Like its predecessor Juvéderm XC, Juvéderm Voluma XC is an injectable hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. (Hyaluronic acid [HA] is a substance that naturally occurs  in our bodies.   It helps your skin retain moisture and volume, as well as boosts collagen production and provides youthful glow.) While Juvéderm XC is intended for use in filling in fine lines and wrinkles, Juvéderm Voluma XC is the first facial filler that is FDA approved exclusively for use in enhancing the contour of the cheeks. In addition, by enhancing the cheekbone area, Juvéderm Voluma XC provides a subtle lift throughout the cheek area and the lower region of the face, smoothing parentheses lines and nasolabial folds. Thus, some patients may be able to avoid  other facial rejuvenation procedures  simply by undergoing Juvéderm Voluma XC treatment.

Cheek Enhancement Cost

If you are ready to see how enhancing the contour of your cheeks can improve your overall look, it is time to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During consultation, your doctor  will evaluate your facial structure and listen to your aesthetic goals before preparing  a treatment protocol that will help you achieve your desired result, and calculate the cheek enhancement fillers cost. Whether it’s implants or cheek fillers, our providers will make sure to recommend the plan of action to help you look your best and be satisfied with the outcome.

Top 5 Plastic Surgery For Men

At South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, women are not our only patients. We serve men seeking aesthetic improvement of various areas of their bodies and faces. Although men

generally do not like to reveal whether they have had cosmetic surgery, they are increasingly showing interest in these types of procedures. In recent years, men have displayed interest in cosmetic procedures such as tummy tuck, face lift and neck lift, hair transplant and laser hair removal, and more.  According to data collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the following were the top five plastic surgery procedures among men in 2013.

#1: Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgery For Men

A new study by the American Socieinjectable fillers

  • cheek augmentation
  • cheek fillers

ty of Plastic Surgeons has shown that men have been increasingly opting for rhinoplasty or nose reshaping surgery. In 2013 alone more than 57,000 male patients had it, constituting 26 percent of total Rhinoplasty patients in this year’s data.

Rhinoplasty is a type of cosmetic procedure which can involve removing excess cartilage and skin from parts of your nostrils to improve their shape as well as changing other aspects like bridge height and width, birth or trauma defects of the nose, and more.

Nose reshaping surgery can be an important step in becoming your most authentic self once again if you’re unhappy with the way your nose looks. Our surgeons are happy to perform this operation on those who wish to change something about themselves so they may live better lives.

#2: Eyelid Plastic Surgery For Men

“Eyelid lift” or Blepharoplasty is an effective way of removing sagging skin on the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure can be used by both men and women who want that perfect refreshed look! Currently, more than 30,000 male patients had blepharoplasty in 2013 because they wanted a youthful appearance around their eyes.

#3: Liposuction Plastic Surgery For Men

Over 23,500 men underwent liposuction in 2013 to remove stubborn fat that is resistant to healthy diet and exercise habits from their “problem areas.” This number is up 3 percent from the previous year.

#4: Breast Reduction: Gynecomastia Plastic Surgery for Men

Gynecomastia is a condition in males characterized by excessive glandular breast tissue, excess fat and skin throughout the chest, or a combination of these, which leads to the appearance of enlarged male breasts. In 2013, nearly 23,000 men had male breast reduction or gynecomastia surgery in the United States. Gynecomastia is an exclusively male plastic surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon performs liposuction of the breasts following by removing excess skin and glandular tissue, resulting in a more masculine appearance of the torso.

#5: Facelift Plastic Surgery For Men

As with eyelid surgery, facelift surgery is an effective way to achieve a more youthful, rejuvenated look throughout the face. Again, the numbers prove that men, too, want to stave off the hands of time. More than 12,500 males underwent a facelift procedure in 2013 — 7 percent more than the previous year. It’s common to combine facelift procedure with neck lift to ensure the best result.

Flat Stomach Foods You Should Eat + Foods To Avoid

You probably know that following a nutritious diet and getting regular exercise is integral to staying fit and looking toned. But, did you know that eating certain foods may actually help you achieve a flat tummy contour? South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery shares some of the best foods for flat abs.

Metabolism Boosting Foods For A Flat Stomach

Almonds. These little guys are packed with important nutrients, including protein, which your body needs to build lean muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn while resting. Almonds are also filled with fiber to keep you feeling full longer; vitamin E, an antioxidant; and magnesium, a mineral your body needs to build muscle and regulate blood sugar, so you don’t overeat.

Eggs. Not only are eggs a great source of protein, they also have a healthy balance of essential amino acids. Your body uses amino acids to manufacture everything from muscle and tissue fibers to the chemicals in your brain. Note: If you have high cholesterol, be sure to check with your doctor before eating more whole eggs.

Apples. It turns out an apple a day really is good for your health. A large apple contains five grams of fiber to keep you feeling satisfied, and it is also comprised of almost 85-percent water, which also contributes to the full feeling.

Yogurt. A recent study published in the International Journal of Obesity reported that individuals who get their recommended amount of calcium from yogurt rather than other options may lose more inches around the abdominal area. This could be because yogurt contains probiotic bacteria to keep your digestion system working properly. This leads to less bloating, gas and constipation, which, in turn, leads to a flat tummy!

Having a Hard Time Getting a Flat Belly?

If you exercise regularly and eat healthy foods already but still have difficulty achieving a flat belly, South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery can help. We offer patients in Fort Lauderdale SmartLipo laser liposuction to remove unwanted fat from the abdomen or other areas, with minimal downtime. We also offer tummy tuck surgery to eliminate excess abdominal skin and repair damaged abdominal muscles for a toned midsection.

Should I Get A Breast Implant Upgrade?

Choosing a type of breast implant, whether you are planning to undergo breast augmentation surgery for the first time or are thinking about replacing your current implants, is a personal decision. However, here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering whether to upgrade to silicone breast implants, which will help you make your ultimate decision.

Could Silicone Implants Fit My Body Type?

Breast augmentation patients must have a sufficient amount of skin, fat and breast tissue to cover and support breast implants properly. In addition, saline implants are more prone to rippling or folding within the implant pocket. In patients with thin skin and little body fat, saline implants are more likely to cause visible rippling underneath the skin’s surface. That is why patients with this body type often benefit from choosing silicone implants instead of saline implants.

Will I Have to Undergo Breast Imaging Exams?

The body can naturally absorb the saline, or sterile saltwater, filling material inside saline breast implants. This means that in case of an implant rupture, your body would safely absorb and pass the filling material. Also, in case of implant rupture, you would notice that there is a problem with the damaged implant because your breast would look flat on the affected side.

In contrast, the body cannot absorb the silicone gel filling material inside silicone implants in case of a leak, or rupture. Instead, the silicone filling material stays intact either within or close to the implant pocket. When this happens, it can lead to a condition called “silent rupture,” in which the patient does not realize there is a problem with the breast implant.

For this reason, the FDA recommends that patients with silicone breast implants undergo breast imaging exams (e.g., mammogram, MRI) every three years, starting the third year after the initial enhancement surgery. If you are okay with the idea of having a breast imaging exam every three years, silicone implants might be the appropriate choice for you.

Is It Worth the Slight Premium for Implants That More Closely Resemble Natural Breasts?

Silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breasts than saline implants. They are also available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to fit various body type and frames. However, they also require a slightly larger incision for insertion than their saline counterparts because silicone implants come prefilled from the manufacturer. (Saline implants can be filled by your surgeon after insertion.) For these reasons, silicone breast implants are slightly more expensive than saline implants. However, if you do not mind paying a slight premium for implants that more closely resemble the look and feel of natural breasts, silicone implants might be right for you.

The best way to determine whether to upgrade to silicone implants is to come in for a consultation. Your knowledgeable breast augmentation surgeon can listen to your aesthetic objectives and evaluate your anatomy before suggesting the type of breast implant that is most appropriate for your needs.

Although having children is a joyous time in one’s life, pregnancy and breastfeeding often leave women with certain aesthetic concerns, including loose abdominal skin, separated abdominal muscles that have lost their tone and sagging and / or deflated-looking breasts.

At South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we offer patients in Fort Lauderdale mommy makeover surgery to correct the aesthetic concerns that typically develop as a result of having children. However, we realize that not all moms share the same cosmetic complaints. That is why we often customize mommy makeover surgery to address each patient’s specific concerns. Here are our top three mommy makeover combinations.

Tummy Tuck + Breast Lift Surgery

With abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, your board-certified plastic surgeon makes a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen. The incision is strategically positioned in the pubic area, where it can be concealed by the underwear or bikini line. The surgeon eliminates any excess skin before repairing the underlying tissues including the damaged abdominal muscles. The remaining skin in then re-draped over the new flatter, toned abdomen before the incision is closed. The navel is repositioned so it is aligned with the new abdominal contour, using a second incision in the belly button.

Breast lift surgery is performed to raise drooping breasts to a higher, more youthful position on the chest wall. The surgeon again removes any excess skin, if needed, before repositioning the breast tissue higher up on the chest wall, thereby improving the look of sagging breasts.

Tummy Tuck + Breast Lift + Breast Augmentation Surgery

Sometimes, breast lift surgery is not enough to restore a beautiful appearance to the breasts. If you have lost a substantial amount of breast volume due to nursing, you may require surgical breast augmentation in your mommy makeover. We offer saline implants, silicone implants or natural breast augmentation (a technique that uses your own fat taken from another area of your body to enhance your breasts) to restore volume to deflated-looking breasts.

By combining tummy tuck, breast lift and breast augmentation procedures in your mommy makeover, we can address the cosmetic concerns that most often occur as a result of having children.

Tummy Tuck + Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery

Perhaps your breasts did not suffer any aesthetic damage from breastfeeding, but you desire a lifted, curvier derrière. In this case, we can include Brazilian butt lift surgery in your mommy makeover procedure. With Brazilian butt lift, fat is taken from another area of your body that typically has an excess of fat cells, such as your hips or thighs. The fat cells are purified and then re-injected into the upper quadrant of your posterior to enhance the “S” curve that most of us desire. The aesthetic outcome is a more elevated, voluptuous derrière that other moms will envy!

The most important thing to note with mommy makeover surgery is that it can be customized specifically for you! During your consultation, your surgeon will listen to your aesthetic concerns, evaluate your anatomy and suggest an appropriate treatment protocol that best suits your specific needs.

Bikini Ready?

It’s June, and that means the official start of summer is here! (Summer starts June 21, to be exact.) Are you bikini ready? If not, don’t worry! South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery is here to help.

At South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, our Fort Lauderdale plastic surgeons have broad expertise in a range of cosmetic surgery procedures designed to get your figure in top shape. Here are some of our most popular cosmetic procedures, which can help you feel more confident and ready to don your favorite itsy bitsy bikini.

Liposuction

If you are at or slightly above your ideal body weight but are plagued by pockets of fat throughout certain areas of your body, you might be a good candidate for liposuction surgery. With liposuction, your board-certified plastic surgeon can eliminate stubborn deposits of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise, leaving you with a smoother, flatter contour throughout the treatment area. Liposuction is an effective way to treat almost any area of the body, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, back, upper arms and even the neck and chin area.

Also, thanks to advancements in technology and surgical techniques, you now have a variety of liposuction approaches to choose from. We offer tumescent liposuction to minimize bleeding, bruising and swelling as well as SmartLipo, which uses a laser to melt fat cells for easier removal. SmartLipo has been shown to be as effective as other forms of liposuction and generally requires less recovery time, so you can get back to the beach quicker.

Breast Augmentation

Perhaps you have the firm abdomen you desire, but you lack fullness up top. If putting on a bikini leaves you feeling flat throughout the breast area, you may benefit from breast augmentation surgery. We offer saline or silicone breast implants to help you get the dream breasts you desire. We also offer natural breast augmentation which involves enhancing your breasts with the use of your own fat that has been harvested from another area of your body (e.g., the buttocks, hips, thighs). It’s a great option for women who need just a bit more oomph throughout their bust line.

Brazilian Butt Lift

Some individuals are happy with the way the front of their body looks in a bikini but long for a more voluptuous, lifted derrière. If this sounds familiar, Brazilian butt lift surgery might be right for you. Brazilian butt lift is similar to natural breast augmentation in that fat cells are harvested from an area of your body that typically has an ample amount of fat. After the fat cells are purified, they are re-injected into the upper quadrant of the buttocks. The aesthetic result is a rounder, more lifted posterior that looks great from any angle. With Brazilian butt lift, you’ll be ready to take long walks on the beach, sans your bikini cover-up!

5 Best Summer Body Tips

The South Florida beaches are bustling year-round, but they will become even more crowded next month as we welcome the official start to summer. With Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, you might be feeling confident about your body and ready to slip into a bikini and hit up sand – or not! Luckily for all of us who need some help before hitting Miami this season, Fort Lauderdale plastic surgeons have created these great body care tips for summer.

Summer Body Tip: Flush Out Fat

Firstly, evaluate your diet. Smaller meals satisfy the appetite and don’t leave room for overeating when you’re extremely hungry. Include vegetables and fruits into your nutrition plan, add protein foods and healthy fats. Reduce or eliminate processed foods and sugar. Make sure you’re hydrating properly. Drinking a lot of water throughout the day will fill you up, give you energy for your workouts and — although it may seem counterintuitive — flush water weight.

Secondly, up your cardio routine and get your sweat on. Experts agree that the best way to fight fat is with high-intensity interval training (HIIT), in which you alternate between intense bursts of activity and less-intense activity or rest. For example, alternate one-minute bursts of sprinting with two minutes of walking, and repeat that cycle five times in 15 minutes. Or, if you’re not crazy about running, substitute your favorite cardio alternative, such as cycling or swimming, or taking HIIT fitness classes. If losing weight quickly is your goal, try combining HIIT exercise with strength training. Focus on your core, legs, and back. Working on the largest muscle groups in your body will help you burn more calories and get toned.

Consider hiring a personal trainer to help structure your workout routine and develop a personal nutrition plan to maximize the effectiveness of your weight loss plan in a healthy way.

Summer Body Tip: Eliminate Unwanted Hair

Let’s be honest: hair removal is a thankless task, but virtually unavoidable during bikini season. Laser hair removal permanently destroys hair follicles and prevents you from having to regularly shave, wax or tweeze areas of unwanted hair. Laser hair removal can be used on the legs, underarms, bikini line or face. Depending on the treatment area, a series of appointments may be necessary. Contact our practice today to learn more!

Summer Body Tip: Get Your Glow On

A tanned body looks toned and beautiful, but bronze skin often comes with risks. The UV rays of the sun and artificial light from a tanning bed pose serious cancer concerns for your body. Every year, two million people are diagnosed with melanoma because they tanned indoors or out. However! You don’t have to go without enjoying that nice glow: Build up a vibrant tan using at-home self-tanning products like lotions or sprays. Or, look for salons that offer ‚ÄúMystic Tan‚Äù in your area, and have a professional apply your spray tan.

Summer Body Tip: Shop for a New Bikini or Bathing Suit

Perhaps the reason you’re not bikini-ready isn’t necessarily your body or confidence — it’s that you don’t yet have the perfect swimsuit! Spend a few hours browsing your favorite mall or online stores for a couple of new options. Pick a style that flatters your best features: your butt, breasts, legs, or tummy. Then, treat yourself to a cute cover-up and pair of sandals to complement your bikini.

Summer Body Tip: Consider Cosmetic Enhancements

If you feel embarrassed by a particular body part (e.g., breasts, stomach or buttocks), consider cosmetic enhancement at our plastic surgery practice. We offer a spectrum of services, including tummy tuck, Brazilian Butt Lift ,breast augmentation, and more to improve your appearance and boost your self-confidence. Schedule an informational consultation today to learn more.
