Are Compression Garments Bulky?

Are Compression Garments Bulky?

Why wear a compression garment after liposuction?

Compression garments aren’t mandatory after liposuction, but the majority of plastic surgeons believe that they aid in patient comfort and recovery. In this post, the team at the South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery explains how these garments can help the post-operative process. Then, the team addresses a common question regarding the fit of the garment and whether it is bulky.

Why Compression Garments Are Used

There are a few reasons why compression garments are recommended for use after liposuction. First, the garment prevents hollow tunnels created by the cannula during the procedure from filling up with liquid. This also prevents the healing process from being prolonged due to fluid accumulation. Second, compression garments help the skin contract and adhere to the underlying structures. Finally, compression garments help to minimize swelling, water retention and discomfort following surgery.

The Fit of a Compression Garment

Compression garments should fit snugly, but not so tightly that they hamper breathing or cause a feeling of soreness. If the garment is the proper size, it should not be bulky. It should fit neatly under your regular clothing without looking obvious. Some patients worry about their garments being visible through normal-fitting clothing when they return to work; however, this typically does not happen. Depending on the treated area, it may be easier to conceal the garment under long sleeves and pants. This is why many people opt to have liposuction in the winter months, when the temperatures are cooler and require more clothing coverage.

Some patients have asked whether they can substitute Spanx garments in place of a surgical compression garment. We recommend that for the first three to four weeks, you wear the surgical compression garments you receive from our surgeons. These surgical garments are specially designed and manufactured to have a higher degree of compression and to put pressure on the targeted healing areas. After the first three to four weeks, you are welcome to switch to Spanx or Spanx-like garments, if you prefer. You can then wear Spanx as long as they feel comfortable.
