Breast augmentations are easily one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Breast implants now come in a variety of types and sizes, and most patients are delighted with their results. However, if you’re unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts after treatment, or if you experience unexpected complications, you may be a good candidate for breast implant revision surgery.
Breast implant revision surgery is performed by replacing old implants with new ones and then improving the overall appearance of the breasts. Even if you are happy with your implants, they will need to be replaced eventually. While they are long-lasting, breast implants are not permanent. If it’s been 10+ years since your breast augmentation, you should consider revision and replacement surgery.
At The South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery, our board-certified surgeons have decades of combined experience performing breast implant revision surgery. We apply the most innovative techniques to give you the best results and prevent further complications.

During your initial visit, expect to provide your complete medical history, including all your medications, allergies, and previous surgeries. You’ll also undergo an extensive physical exam and blood tests before your surgeon takes photographs to aid in performing the breast implant revision procedure. Finally, you’ll receive important instructions to prepare for treatment, as well as a realistic explanation of the results you can expect to achieve.
Breast implant revision surgery may include a breast lift, reduction, increase in implant size, or simply the placement of new implants that are the same size. The goal is to improve the appearance of your breasts by correcting asymmetry, treating any complications, and making your breasts appear more natural. Typically, the procedure will be performed very similarly to a breast augmentation. However, your surgeon will begin by removing the old implant and then replacing it with a new one. The entire procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours, depending on the complexity of your case.
Your breasts will appear firmer and fuller immediately following your surgery, and you may feel slightly uncomfortable. You may also notice some swelling and bruising, which is common with most surgeries. Allow 3-4 months to see the full results of your breast implant revision, however you will immediately notice a difference in their size and shape.
Patients are required to return to the center three days after their surgery to allow the surgeon to remove bandages and check the incision area. Your surgeon will also examine your breasts at regular intervals during the first 90 days post-surgery.
During your consultation, you will collaborate with your surgeon to create your treatment plan. You will also decide whether you’d like your breast size increased, decreased, or left the same. During the revision procedure, your surgeon will remove your old implants first. Then, they will place the new implants using one of two techniques.
The South Florida Center for Cosmetic Surgery employs two different incision techniques–periareolar and inframammary. For the Periareolar approach, your surgeon will make an incision around the areola. For the inframammary technique, an incision is made under the breast.
Yes. You can return home the same day, but a responsible individual should pick you up from the surgery center and keep you under their care for the first 24 hours.
General anesthesia is used for all surgical procedures at the South Florida Center and is always performed by a professional M.D. Anesthesiologist.
This varies based on the type of breast implants you have. Most implants should be replaced about once every 10 years. However, they should be replaced sooner if you experience any complications or if you’d like to change your breasts’ size, shape, or appearance.
